ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 1

In this module, students are introduced to architectural design. Through this 14 weeks, students will be exposed to the design process, architectural design elements and principles, model making, human anthropometry, spatial analysis and concept development. They will learn to develop their idea through the guidance of a tutor during tutorial sessions.

Project 1

Project 1

In this first project, students have to choose a Pokemon character that cam relate to their personality. the, they have to create an artwork based on that personality.

The Pokemon character that I chose was Klink. The following slide shows my data collection and progress on the the Pokemon character.

Reflection

Honestly speaking, I did not like the outcome of this project as this was not what I had imagine for this character. I think the reason that I did not like this is because I was not able to develop this idea. Every tutorial, I changed the concept of the artwork. So it was like a mock up after mock up after mock up. Even the final product was a mock up. I really did not like it. So lesson learnt from this project: Never Change the concept. Always stick with it. Make necessary design changes if you have to. STICK with the idea, develop it and be proud of it.

Project 2

For this next project, students are asked to pair or make groups of 3. The students will then propose a shelter that is based on their personality or interest. When making the shelter, they have to keep in mind the human proportion of the user, which is them. The model created will be a 1:1 scale model. During the submission, students will have to stay in another group's tent to test out the functionality and ergonomics of the tent.

Project 2
Progress

When making the tent, my group mate and I had to keep meeting up to discuss of the design of the tent. IN the end we chose the concept of exploring. We wanted to show the process of exploration when someones explores our shelter.

So the concept goes like this. We chose the form as a circle. The center of the circle is the topic that we are exploring. The outline of the circle is the way a person explores: learning the topic thoroughly, by knowing all sides of it. As for the interior, when someone enters the tent, they have to bend down and to enter the tent. Then when they progress into the tent, the ceiling becomes progressively higher which enables them to stand straight. This means that when a person first encounter the topic/experience, he/ she is timid and unsure about the topic; but when he knows about it, he is more open and welcome to the idea of the topic.

The following images shows the final mock up that we made and the scene on the day of submission.

Reflection

From this project, I have to say that I have learnt a lot and it was very enjoyable. Throughout the whole project, I decided to stick to one strong idea only. Even though there were problems in making the design, my group mate and I just kept researching, making mock ups and discussing how to solve the problem. And in the end, it all paid off. The design was unique and none looked like it. I am really proud of the tent.

However, it was not perfect, it had a flaw in terms of comfort. We did not put a base for the tent. So those people who had to stay in the tent had to sleep on the grass. (we did have a thin cloth to cover the grass. But that was not enough) Moreover, we did not put a cloth to cover the opening of the tent. As we were staying outdoors, it was very cold. So the person in the tent would feel very cold too. So sorry my friend.

Project 3: Dreamspace

For this last project, each student has to create a hideout in the middle of two walls. The hideout would be a dream space for the respective student and will be based on the student's interest and creativity.

So the concept for my hideout is 'A workaholic's regret'. It starts off with me working all the time to achieve my goal. I am so focused on the goal and I would neglect everything: tasks, responsibilities, friends, etc. So the inspiration for my hideout is a tunnel. However, instead of making a tunnel like normal cave-like ones. instead of the u-shaped wall, I use wall that were angled. The walls were angled that when a person walks past them, he would not be able to see what is behind the wall unless he looks back. Then when i reach the of the tunnel (I reached my goal) and when I look back. I am able to see all that I have missed as the open angle of the wall is now facing me.

I made many mock ups when creating this design and here they are.

Reflection

My reflection for this assignment is a mixed feeling. I feel happy because I am done and I feel sad because of the external tutor said during the presentation. It is partly my fault I guess. However, what they said is true and is just something to remember.

The first to learn is that I have to keep in mind the site of the building. I cannot just ignore the site and not design anything there. The second thing is I did not really show the concept properly, They asked me how did I progress from the concept model to the final model as they did look similar. Moreover, they wanted to see the what I had explain to them, meaning the view from both sides, like in the concept model. They did say that I had made a mistake showing them the concept model, since my final model did not deliver what the final model could. Well what is done is done. Just have to learn from my mistake and not do it next time.
